The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is one of the states that’s building considerable momentum toward legalizing online gaming in 2017, and even most of the area’s land-based operators are reportedly on board with the passing of such legislation. The casino industry is already significantly thriving in the state, with $1.27 billion being paid to state and local coffers from slot tax revenue in the 2015-16 fiscal year.
Although the list’s order can vary from year to year, casinos with the best payout percentages in the area typically include the Sands Bethlehem, Parx Casino, the Meadows Racetrack and Casino and Valley Forge Casino. In the 2015-16 fiscal year, it was Sands Bethlehem at the top with a 93.25 percent payout rate on its machines. The overall payout percentages in Pennsylvania compare favorably with those in nearby Ohio and New Jersey, although New York boasted two casinos, Resorts World and Empire City, that had the highest numbers of any of the four states.
That said, there have been a pair of notable six-figure payouts in recent Pennsylvania casino history, both coming within the last five years. In all instances, the winners chose to remain anonymous. Two of the jackpots were hit at Rivers Casino and on the same machine, the $1 Quick Hit Platinum. Meanwhile, the biggest payout in the state, a seven-figure haul, was won at Meadows Casino in August 2012.
The larger of the two Rivers Casino jackpots was $260,767 in June 2014, which served as the most lucrative payout in the history of the casino since it opened in 2009. That surpassed a $182,966 jackpot that was hit in April 2014 at the same facility.
The Meadows Casino million-dollar payday came to exactly $1,192,567, the winner being a Morgantown man who chose to remain anonymous. The lucky spin came on a $5 progressive machine tied into nine other slots at the casino. The jackpot originally began at $25,000 and built for three years.
With gaming revenues at Pennsylvania’s 12 casinos reaching an all-time high in the last fiscal year, the land-based industry is naturally in robust health, meaning more consistently impressive payouts could well be on the horizon.
