What is a high-end sportsbook without a sportsbook?

Philadelphia sports fans, sports bettors, and foodies will find out come this fall when famed restaurateur Stephen Starr — and his partner in this endeavor, Paul Martino — open up Bankroll, a “luxury sports bar experience for those seeking to be immersed in all the action of the game,” according a press release announcing the concept.

So what, exactly, is Bankroll?

It will be 18,000 square feet worth of space located in the old Boyd Theater at 19th and Chestnut in the heart of Center City. It will feature seating for 400 people across multiple rooms, three bars, and a rentable “living room” style area, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal. It will have high-end food and decor and be very Starr-like in execution — all with an eye toward sports fans, specifically sports betting fans, with dozens of screens showing sports all day and night and patrons encouraged to place mobile wagers.

Martino, according to a BillyPenn.com article, runs Bullpen Capital, a Doylestown-based firm that was an early investor in the FanDuel Sportsbook app, and is looking to “redefine” the sports-watching experience.

Our first-of-its-kind concept will bring people together to redefine how sports and other live events are watched,” Martino said in a press release announcing the concept. “As the majority of our founders are longtime Philadelphians, we’re deeply invested in being a strong community partner and creating a venue for all Philadelphians to be proud of. I couldn’t be more excited to kick off construction on this dream project.”

Ground broken

Construction began in earnest this past spring, with an eye toward opening sometime this autumn.

“We are elated to bring such a novel experience to the city of Philadelphia where sports are deeply woven into the fabric of the community,” said Padma Rao, CEO of Bankroll, in the press release announcement. “Bankroll will be a seamless blend of tech and luxury — combining personal service and high-end cuisine in an immersive environment. It’s an honor to revitalize The Boyd Theater to become a place once again for entertainment and excitement.”
