From horse racing venue, to racino, to full-service casino, Penn National has been a staple of Pennsylvania’s gambling industry for over 45 years. Now, its casino property, Hollywood Casino, has entered the online realm as well, offering what is (for now, at least) the largest selection of virtual slots and table games in PA.
On top of Hollywood’s comparatively robust selection of games, it boasts other attractive features, like a duel sign-up and deposit bonus, along with native iOS and Android apps. On the flipside, Hollywood could certainly up its games in regards to banking methods and recurring promos.

Breaking down the bonus
Hollywood Casino players are eligible for not one, but two bonuses, both of which give provide significant value.
First up is the $25 no deposit bonus, which is credited to your bonus bank immediately after creating an account at the site. But before you try and cash that money out immediately, though, keep in mind that you’ll need to wager the $25 at least once on any real money games.
If after playing your free $25 you like what Hollywood Casino has to offer, you can grab an even bigger bonus in the form of a 100% deposit match up to $500. To claim this bonus, simply deposit at least $10, and you’ll receive an equal amount in bonus money inside your player account. Before the money is cleared to your cash wallet, keep in mind you’ll need to wager the amount of your bonus 20x.
So, for example, if you deposited $300, you’d receive $600 total ($300 of your cash + $300 in bonus credits). But, in order to cash out the bonus portion, you’d need have to make $6,000 in wagers on Hollywood casino games.
While $6,000 might seem like a lot, the good thing about this bonus is that all games on the site contribute 100% to the wager requirement. This is not usually the case. Normally, play on slot machines – which usually offer worse odds to players than games like blackjack – would contribute 100%, while games like blackjack and video poker would contribute much less.
With these favorable terms, you’ll be able to play games with high return to player percentages while clearing your bonus, giving you a much better chance of coming out ahead after playing it through.
Why play at Penn National’s Hollywood online casino?
- Game selection: Hollywood only got a short head start against SugarHouse and Parx’s online casinos, yet it already offers the largest library of games in the state. While this advantage will surely shrink (or disappear) as the industry matures, the operator has done an impressive job of quickly adding a number of slot and table game titles to its collection.
- iOS and Android apps: While other operators have delayed iOS apps due to recent changes in Apple’s terms and conditions, Hollywood quickly launched both an iOS and Android app. Unfortunately, though, game selection is sparse on iPhones and iPads, as games now need to be coded natively for the iOS programming language. Android has no such requirements, so selection is much more robust.
- Free money/match bonus combo: Welcome bonuses comprised of both free money sign-up offers and deposit matches are common in New Jersey, but are not the norm in PA – yet. Hollywood is ahead of the curve here, offering players a free $25 starter bankroll, plus the chance to get an even bigger match bonus upon depositing. The deposit match bonus terms are also less strict than some competitors.
What’s not to love?
- Limited banking methods
- iOS users cannot access a larger game library via the mobile Safari browser
The registration process
Registering your account at Hollywood Casino is a snap, and can be done anywhere in the country. After navigating to the website using our links, simply click the Register button. From there you’ll create a username and password, then enter your email address and choose a security question.
Next you’ll be prompted to enter your personal details, including your date of birth, phone number, address and last four digits of your Social Security number (for fraud verification checks). It’s on this screen where you’ll enter the promo code you see mentioned on this page (if applicable).
Once you agree to the terms and conditions and click Finish Registration, your free money bonus should appear inside your account. Of course, before you play, the site will perform a verification check to make sure that you are inside the borders of Pennsylvania. If not, you’ll still be able to make cashouts and deposits, but you’ll only be able to play games on demo mode.
Hollywood online casino software platforms
The trend among legal U.S. online gambling brands so far has been to offer their software for both PC and Mac, as well as across Android and iOS-powered devices. Hollywood Casino doesn’t deviate from that formula, and even gets a few brownie points for having launched a native iOS app in the face of tight new restrictions put in place by Apple’s app store.
These days, most gaming providers do not force players to download their clients. Instead, the platform is browser-based, allowing for quick and painless access with no downloads required. Hollywood follows this model, offering its full catalog of casino titles via most modern and semi-updated browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Edge, and Safari for Mac.
The desktop interface is solid, with a clean (yet simple) aesthetic, and quick loading menus. Games are distinguished clearly by large icons, and players are able to view more information about each product, as well as play it in demo mode. Hollywood also has no qualms about displaying a game’s return-to-player, which is a nice perk. It’s great to see this level of transparency from an online casino provider.
The game filters and search functions make finding any title a breeze. Account management is handled under the mychoice menu, which is a little confusing (since that is Hollywood’s loyalty program). There, players will gain access to the cashier, responsible gaming limits, and basic account information.
We should note that account management menus are sometimes dreadfully slow to load, and provide a bit less information than we’ve become accustomed to. These are are minor qualms, but taken together, do add up to an annoyance.
More than ever, online gamblers want to play when they want and where they want, and Hollywood Casino delivers with apps for both iOS and Android devices.
That said, the iOS app is severely limited in terms of game selection due to an abrupt change Apple made in regards to gambling apps, which forces developers to program all games using Apple’s own native code.
This is problematic because normally, iOS casino apps simply act as a sort of portal to titles coded for the web at large. This, unfortunately, is no longer allowed, and since few game developers have spent the time, energy and money required to code directly for iOS, game selection inside the app is paltry.
You can see the result of this crippling policy by logging into Hollywood’s iOS offering, which currently boasts fewer games than can be counted on two hands. Its Android app, by contrast, is stocked with around 60% of the games currently available on the desktop website.
Competitor Play SugarHouse has gotten around the iOS issue by offering games through the mobile Safari browser. It’s yet to be seen if Hollywood will follow suit.
You can find both apps by navigating to the Hollywood website — iOS users will be sent to the App Store, whereas Android users can download the app directly from the casino site.
Apart from game selection, the Hollywood apps give users the ability to interact with their accounts just as they would on the full desktop site. Gamblers can make deposits and withdrawals, track their bonuses, loyalty rewards and transaction details with a few simple taps. They can also limit their accounts if they feel they are going overboard with their play.
Banking at Hollywood Casino PA
Online gambling in PA is a nascent industry, so we understand that casinos need time to grow. However, when compared with the breadth of banking methods competitors are already offering, Hollywood really needs to step up its game. A number of popular and common funding methods have yet to appear on the site, which we hope to see added soon. Thankfully payments can be made via VIP Preferred eCheck, which is one of the fastest and most reliable methods out there.
Here’s the selection available so far:
- Credit/Debit cards: Deposit with Visa and MasterCards
- ACH (VIP Preferred): Enter your banking information along with your ID number, make your deposit and receive your funds instantly.
- Hollywood Play+ Card: If your credit card deposits are rejected, you can try depositing onto a Play+ card (you don’t need the physical card) using the same credit card or via ACH.
- PayNearMe: Make your deposit with cash at a local 7-Eleven, Family Dollar or CVS.
As for withdrawals, you’re even more limited:
- ACH (VIP Preferred)
- Play+ Card
- Paper check
Online game selection at Hollywood Casino
While it might not last, Hollywood currently holds the title for biggest casino game library in the Keystone State. And that’s quite the accomplishment considering that it only got a two-day head start on Play SugarHouse PA, which has for years offered up a massive suite of games at its New Jersey sister-site.
That’s not to say that the selection (70+ games) at Hollywood is huge, but in comparison to its closest state competitor, it’s got nearly double the amount of games.
Slots at Hollywood Casino online
The slot library at Hollywood Casino is impressive – well, for a burgeoning PA iGaming site, we should say.
While the biggest NJ online casinos offer libraries nearly 10 times what Hollywood currently spreads, it’s only a matter of time before the casino, along with competitors, begins to catch up.
Since all games must be tested and approved by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, new titles have been trickling in slowly, albeit steadily.
Hollywood’s slot library is made up almost exclusively of titles created by Swedish developer NetEnt and iGaming behemoth IGT. The appearance of IGT games is no surprise, being that Hollywood Casino leverages the company to power its backend software platform.
The site has also launched a single progressive slot, NetEnt’s wildly popular Divine Fortune. The jackpot slot first appeared on Play SugarHouse in PA, but has finally made the rounds to several other online casinos.
Divine Fortune is a fan-favorite in New Jersey. Besides a jackpot which can climb into the several hundreds of thousands of dollars, it offers a number of fun and exciting mechanics which keep players coming back for more. What’s more, for a jackpot slot, it boasts a relatively high return to player percentage (96.6%), much better odds than you would find at the majority of slots offered at Hollywood’s land-based location.
Other fan-favorites include Cleopatra, Wheel of Fortune Triple Extreme!, Starburst, and Dead or Alive
Blackjack at Hollywood PA
Strangely, table games have been slow to roll out at PA online casinos. Why is that surprising? Unfortunately, the PA government levies a massive 54% tax on slot proceeds, but only collects about 16% from table game winnings. This means that, even though slots are usually the most popular online casino game, operators will likely be pushing table games due to the much softer tax rate.
We’re still in early days, but right now, Hollywood Casino only sports one blackjack game (provided by IGT). The game itself is quite good; it pays 3 to 2 on blackjacks, forces dealers to stand on all 17s, allows double downs after splits, and enables the sought after surrender option. There are multiple game settings to tinker around with, and the graphics hold up well enough. The minimum bet is just $1, something you’ll never see at a PA brick-and-mortar casino.
Unfortunately, the table only allows play on one hand at a time, which is perplexing since it costs the casino nothing to allow for multiple hands to be played at once.
If the market evolves anything like that of New Jersey, we will definitely be seeing more flavors of blackjack popping up at Hollywood soon.
While other table games are lacking, Hollywood sure hasn’t skimped on roulette. In fact, the majority of Hollywood’s tables are variations of the iconic casino game, making it somewhat of a PA online roulette paradise.
Players can choose from American roulette, which features a 0 and 00 slot (and should be avoided), European roulette (only one 0 slot), French roulette, and something called Roulette Advanced, which is effectively single-zero roulette.
Wagers go as low as $1 on these games, giving players a chance to extend their sessions much longer than they could in a live casino.
Hollywood video poker
For tax purposes, video poker machines are considered slots, meaning that they will be taxed at the eye-watering 54% rate. This could explain why Hollywood’s video poker paytables are so awful. Unlike in neighboring New Jersey, which offers full or near-full pay variations of the most popular games, Hollywood skimped on its paytables big time, with games like 8/5 Jacks or Better. Most of the games hover around a 96-97% return with optimal play, when industry standards are closer to 99%. Avoid until Hollywood rectifies this — that is if they do.
If you insist on playing, you’ll have most of the legendary Game King video poker games to choose from. We’ll keep our eyes out for other formats like Ultimate X and Super Times Pay, but here’s what you can play right now:
- Jacks or Better
- Bonus Poker
- Double Bonus Poker
- Double Double Bonus Poker
- Triple Bonus Poker
- Bonus Poker Deluxe
- Deuces Wild Poker
- Deuces Wild Bonus Poker
- Joker Poker
Right now, the only other table game in Hollywood’s menu is baccarat, which is wildly popular in Asia, and especially at Bethlehem’s Wind Creek casino. We expect to see more of these types of games added in the future, like:
- Pai Gow Poker
- Let it Ride
- Three Card Poker
- Spanish 21
- Texas Hold’em Bonus
In addition, Penn National may reach a little further and rollout Virtual Sports and Live Dealer games. The latter seems like a perfect fit, as Penn National is highly concerned about protecting its brick & mortar brand. Live Dealer games will not only attract players in its land-based database, but it may also entice online-only players to give live casino gambling a try.
Hollywood Casino PA loyalty program
Hollywood’s reward program is dubbed mychoice and comes with significantly more advantages than other state casino loyalty schemes due to its expansive reach.
To explain, Hollywood Casino is owned by Penn National, a large gambling conglomerate which now operates properties in 41 states. This means that players can earn and enjoy rewards at over two dozen of those properties scattered across the country using one rewards account.
Now, Hollywood online casino gamblers join in on the fun too, earning mychoice rewards just as they would by playing at a brick-and-mortar location.
So how does it work? Like other programs, players earn tier points by playing real money games, which allows them to climb up a hierarchy of levels. Needless to say, rewards get better and better the higher they climb. There are five levels in the program:
- The Owners Club
We should point out that while online players can earn mychoice points via Hollywood online casino, they’ll do so at a slower rate compared to brick & mortar players. It’s better than nothing, just don’t expect an easy ride to the top tier.
To be clear, tier points cannot be spent, they simply determine your level in the program. Mycash, on the other hand, is the currency you’ll receive that allows you to take advantage of your hard-earned points.
So what can you spend it on? You can choose to cash in your credits for a host of perks, including hotel stays, dining and entertainment at Penn National properties, free slots play and much more. To activate mychoice, simply navigate to your Hollywood online casino account and look for the mychoice Rewards tab. There you’ll find all the information you need to know about the program.
Customer service at Hollywood online in PA
When advocating for the legalization of online gambling, representatives of Penn National pointed out that the new industry would create a plethora of jobs. And from the look of it, they’re off to a good start in hiring the right people.
Hollywood has customer service reps available 24/7 via live chat, phone and email. Our email correspondences to the site were answered quickly, and we even received a phone call to resolve a technical problem we were experiencing during our testing.
More on Hollywood Casino at Penn National
The story of Penn National Race Course dates back to August 30, 1972. It was then that the 1-mile dirt course took its first wagers. The venue remained a racetrack-only until some 36 years later.
Thanks to legislation passed in 2004, six horse racing facilities were permitted to become Category 1 racinos. Penn National was among the lucky recipients, and opened its casino arm, Hollywood Casino, on February 12, 2008.
The casino, which currently houses over 2,300 slot machines and 74 table games (including a small poker room), is operated by Penn National Gaming — a national powerhouse that operates or has interests in 41 facilities across 19 jurisdictions, thanks to its purchase of Pinnacle Entertainment in 2018.
That same year, Penn National marked even more territory in Pennsylvania, having placed a $50.1 mm bid on the state’s first mini-casino, then snapping up another for $7.5 mm, effectively building a wall around its Grantville property.
Hollywood Casino also managed to open the first live sportsbook in Pennsylvania in late 2018, a month ahead of the competition. It opened its online casino ahead of competitors as well, going live on July 2019.
