Meadows Casino Is Going Hollywood, As In A Name Change By Penn National

By Gary Rotstein

Penn National Gaming is renaming the Meadows Racetrack & Casino to align it with the Hollywood Casino brand already used at its two other Pennsylvania properties and for another one expected to open this year.

The nationally known gaming company that is headquartered in Pennsylvania announced that the Washington County property will officially become Hollywood Casino at The Meadows on Friday. Various festivities, including prize giveaways, will be held that day and throughout October to mark the change.

Penn National owns another Pennsylvania racetrack-casino in Dauphin County: Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course. In August, it opened Hollywood Casino York as the state’s second mini-casino, and another, Hollywood Casino Morgantown, is to open by December in Berks County.

Meadows history

The Meadows, located about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh, first opened as a harness track in 1963, and casino operations commenced there in 2007. It has had several owners since then, with Penn National acquiring it in 2019 as part of a broad national transaction with Pinnacle Entertainment.

The Meadows is mid-sized in revenue among Pennsylvania’s 15 casinos, on pace to earn about $228 million in slots revenue and $28 million from table games in 2021. Its number of slot machines, 2,322, is among the state’s largest, but Penn National says that number is now more than is needed, and it has applied to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to reduce the number to 2,006.

Tuesday morning’s announcement indicated the new name will officially be unveiled at the casino entrance at 9 a.m. Friday. Special “PINK OUT” events will be held that night in support of the American Cancer Society and will include horse races, food trucks, and entertainment, with other festivities and fireworks to take place Saturday. Saturday’s events include a Mercedes-Benz giveaway in an 8 p.m. drawing.
