TwinSpires will be wrapping up its online sports betting and iCasino operations in Pennsylvania on Feb. 15, the Churchill Downs Inc. site announced in an email to customers Thursday.
The message followed closely on the heels of an announcement by CDI Monday that it had reached a deal with British operator bet365 to turn over its market access for Pennsylvania sports and iCasino operations to that firm. There is no timetable yet for when bet365 will launch in the state, as it must still undergo licensing review and approval from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.
The phasing out of TwinSpires in Pennsylvania had long been expected, as CDI had done the same in multiple other states after announcing in February 2022 that it found the online gaming process — particularly sports betting — insufficiently profitable to justify continuing. The company’s online operations in Pennsylvania, which are tied to CDI’s Presque Isle Downs & Casino, have perennially been among the lowest-producing for revenue among the state’s 14 digital sportsbooks and 18 iCasinos.
In its message to customers, TwinSpires said that no more deposits will be taken as of Jan. 23, and players will have until April 17 to withdraw funds from their accounts.
“There will be no sports wagers available or casino games on our site beyond Wednesday, February 15, 2023,” the email stressed.
